Alpha Microsystems Year 2000
As the Year 2000 approaches, users of Alpha Microsystems products have two basic choices. One is to take steps to assure that their Alpha Microsystems installations are Year 2000 compliant. The other is to move to a different solution, supplied by Alpha Microsystems or perhaps by another vendor. In determining Year 2000 compliance, factors to be considered include hardware, operating systems, application software purchased from Alpha Microsystems, and any software purchased from others. The Alpha Microsystems strategy in each of these areas is as follows: Hardware All hardware systems currently manufactured by Alpha Microsystems are Year 2000 compliant when used with a Year 2000 compliant version of the operating system. For some models that are no longer manufactured, limitations on memory size and disk capacity may present obstacles to achieving Year2000 compliance. If you have such a system, we urge you to consider the upgrade programs offered by Alpha Microsystems. Some are designed especially for users seeking Year 2000 compliance for older systems. An upgrade may provide a cost-effective path to Year 2000 compliance while protecting your investment in application software and related business practices. The overall cost of migrating to a totally different system, including impact on relations with customers, suppliers, and other units within the enterprise, can far exceed the cost of an upgrade. Operating Systems The development of Year 2000 compliance for the AMOS operating system has been under way for some years, with some adaptations released as early as 1993. AMOS 2.3A, at the current revision level, is Year 2000 compliant now. A compliant version of AMOS 1.4, designated AMOS 1.4E, is also available. Application Software Purchased from Alpha Microsystems Some applications sold by Alpha Microsystems were previously Year 2000 compliant. These include AlphaLAN, AlphaFAX, AcuCOBOL, and the STEP terminal emulator. Year 2000 compliant versions of certain other applications became available in October 1998. These include AlphaWRITE, AlphaCALC, AlphaMAIL, and MULTI. For the latest information consult the Product Database. Software Purchased from Others All software, and particularly including application software, purchased from entities other than Alpha Microsystems creates unique problems which the customer must address on its own. Alpha Microsystems has not, and does not, intend to evaluate such software to determine if it is Year 2000 compliant. Alpha Microsystems strongly urges every user to independently contact either the software developer or the entity where the product was purchased to assure itself of Year 2000 compliance. Testing for Year 2000 Readiness Alpha Microsystems will soon offer a testing service to determine the Year 2000 compliance status of your hardware, operating system software, and application software sold by Alpha Microsystems. Watch this page for news about availability of the testing service. Migration to Another Solution If you decide to move to another solution on a different hardware platform, let us help you make this potentially costly migration. Our technical support, field engineering, and systems consulting units are experts in designing, implementing, and supporting information systems. Networks are our specialty.
